Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: PR on the High Seas
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was the top grossing film of 2006 and like many blockbuster films, there was a video game that was released alongside the film. Disney's game division, Disney Interactive Studios, had very high expectations for the title and wanted a big, splashy launch event for the game. And what better way to get splashy than throwing a pirate-themed bash aboard a 165-foot Schooner!
The Kajama was the boat in question and docked in Toronto harbour, it was the perfect venue for the Pirates of Caribbean launch event. To help add to the “pirate experience” for attending media, a stunt team was brought it to teach swashbuckling lessons, complete with period costumes for all involved. In addition, a professional linguist was present, teaching the finer points of “pirate speak” and all the jargon needed for a full day of fun.
The event truly brought the Pirates of the Caribbean experience to life and garnered some stellar print and broadcast coverage for the game. Attendees included Much Music, CTV News, Ed the Sock, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and many others. Tanya Enberg from 24 Hours talked about "her taste of pirating life", Kris Abel from Canada AM discussed his swashbuckling lessons and overall, Pirates of the Caribbean became one of the top handheld video games of the summer of 2006.
